Solving Problems with Tom

Solving Problems with Tom

Can my little one problem-solve?
When children are facing conflicts with others or experiencing intense emotions, they don't always know what to do. They require prompts to help them understand the best way to handle the situation. Usually, that prompt is Mum or Dad. :D

You can create a visual cue for resolving problems or big feelings with your little ones. Together with Tom's story, the wheel of choice is a straightforward tool that can help your child with life skills such as problem-solving, conflict resolution, and making healthy choices. The process can be fun and exciting for your little one.

It's a win-win for you and your kid!

It is best to use the wheel when kids are dealing with a "small" problem.

👉 "Small" problems include conflicts that cause "small" feelings of annoyance, boredom, sadness, etc.
👉 "BIG" problems are situations that are scary, dangerous, etc. If the child has a BIG problem, they should be encouraged to tell an adult.

Try this and you might even be surprised by the creative solutions your little one can come up with.
Brainstorm with your little one a list of possible solutions for small to medium problems.
On a pie-shaped chart, write one solution for each slice. Let your little one draw or create symbols.
Make sure your little one is taking the lead in creating the wheel.
When your little one is having big feelings or facing a conflict. Prompt them to use the Wheel of Choice.
As you know, Tom is often left behind. He is experiencing big feelings and needs suggestions on how to handle them.

When reading Tom, keep the wheel of choice handy.

Allow your child to choose from the wheel in response to prompts such as, "What can Tom do?" or "What would best help Tom?" or ‘What would you do if you were Tom?”

Tom’s story is a wonderful way to teach your little one how to problem-solve in a creative way.
